Hard Drive Information
In a personal computer, a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) is the device that stores the information used in the PC. This includes the Operating System, applications, system files, and documents and media files. The Hard Disk Drive is often shortened to just "Hard Drive" or "Hard Disk". The hard drive contains a number of platters(disks) which spin. An arm with a magnetic reader/writer swings back and forth across the disk to access the necessary data as it is requested.
HDD storage is measured by the manufacturer in Gigabytes (1 Billion Bytes). Most operating systems measure the size of the drive in Gibibytes (1,073,741,824 bytes), which explains why some of the drive space seems to be "lost" once the drive is actually installed. ATA is the most common drive interface for home PCs, with the older parallel-ATA, also known as IDE, ATAPI, EIDE, or UDMA are being phased out by the newer Serial ATA (SATA), which is faster, and has conveniently smaller connection cables.
